What is Bubble Ball?
Even though it’s a newer sport, Bubble Ball is quickly gaining traction as one of the most popular games. It’s a guaranteed way to have fun and laugh even if you’re not the one playing. If you’re wondering what it is, check out this info that our team at DFW Metroplex Bubble Ball put together.
What Is Bubble Ball?
It was first introduced in the United States in 2014 by a marketing specialist who was trying to find a way to play with his coworkers. He decided to officially launch the game in the US to fill that need. It’s been described as a combination of rugby, football, and soccer.
It’s a more fun version of these games in which you wrap yourself in a giant inflatable ball while you play. Even though you’re inside a ball, your legs and feet are free so you can run after the ball. The overall goal of the game is to try to score as many goals as you can through the opponent’s goalposts. During the game, there’s plenty of rolling around, bumping into each other, and falling down.
Other Names for the Game
It’s more commonly referred to in other countries as “zorbball”. This name was inspired by “zorbing”, which refers to climbing inside of a plastic orb and rolling down a hill. Some other names you might have heard include:
- Hamster ball
- Human ball
- Zorbing
- Zorb football
- Knockerball
- Orb ball
- Bubble soccer
Whatever name you call it, one thing’s for certain – you will have fun and laugh more than you have ever before all while getting a great workout!
How to Play Bubble Ball
Since the game is a mixture of a few other games, it’s important to note the actual rules of this game. When you play with us, we keep your safety at the forefront and do have a few rules of our own. Here are the official Bubble Ball rules:
- Each game consists of two teams with 5 players on each side
- During the game, only 5 players for each team are allowed on the field. Goalkeepers are not allowed in this game
- Players who are knocked down during the game are allowed to get up without contact from the opposite team
- Referees will blow the whistle 3 times to signal it’s time to stop playing or to signal that it’s halftime or the end of the game. At this time, each player is required to stop. Referees will also use this signal to stop play in order to assist an injured player
- The referees will signal for play to resume with 1 whistle blow
- The ball is still active if it goes out of bounds and play will continue. The exception to this is if the ball goes out of bounds near spectators or anyone who could be injured by continued play. The referees will indicate the ball is still in play when out of bounds by calling, “Play on”
- A goal is scored when the ball passes over the goal line, under the crossbar of the two goalposts
- The team that scores the greater number of goals at the end of the match is the winner. If the game is tied or if no goals have been scored then the match is considered a draw
When you play with us, we’ll go over our in-house rules to make sure everyone stays safe and has fun.
Is It Safe?
Safety can be a concern for many who engage in contact sports. There’s a risk of injury as with soccer or football. The inflatable ball that you are in does provide a nice level of protection around you. The balls also have harnesses inside that keep you and your arms in place to ensure you don’t fall out when your ball rolls over.
Your head is also contained well within the soft ball and provides protection for your face and your brain. It’s also important to make sure you play the game through a professional company with someone who is trained in your safety. This person can make sure the game stays safe and that you know how to properly use the equipment.
