Local Parks in DFW
Most people generally think about the downtown area with its vast variety of skyscrapers and shopping centers, but did you know that Dallas is home to one of the largest municipal park systems in the county?
There are over 406 parks, both big and small, that span across 21 thousand acres of land. Most offer great trails to hike, trees to take shade, and picnic tables. Here is an in-depth look into a few!
Oak Lawn Park (formerly Robert E. Lee Park)
This park is one of the oldest in the Dallas area being created in 1909. Oak Lawn Park spreads over 14-acres with walking trails alongside Lakeside Creek and a scaled-down replica of the Arlington House located in Virginia. Franklin D. Roosevelt erected a 6-ton statue of Robert E. Lee here in 1936, but the statue was removed by the city council in 2017.
River Legacy Parks
If you’re looking for a place to spend an entire day (or several), this is the place for you! These parks stretch from west Fort Worth, through Arlington, and into East Dallas. Within this 1,300-acre oasis, you can find a 10-mile mountain bike trail plus 8 more miles of paved hiking and biking trails. Your family will have the opportunity to see so much wildlife including wild boar and armadillos.
White Rock Lake Park
Located just 5 miles away from Dallas’s downtown area, White Rock Lake Park is over twice the size of New York’s Central Park. This park is located around a 1,015-acre lake where you can go paddle-boarding, kayaking, sailing, and so much more.
There’s also a replica of George Washington’s Mount Vernon house on the west side of the lake to explore. Your entire family will be sure to find something to do, including your dog at the dog park.
Klyde Warren Park
This 5.2-acre park was designed by The Office of James Burnett overtop part of the sunken Woodall Rodgers Freeway in the center of Downtown Dallas. Klyde Warren Park hosts numerous free events to the public ranging from outdoor concerts and films to yoga. When you work up an appetite exploring, you have the option to check out a local food truck in the lot or dine at Savor (the park’s chic gastro-pub).
